IIT Madras Launches 'Jal Dhan Campaign' for Water Conservation

Today, September 15, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has introduced the Jal Dhan Campaign on its campus, coinciding with the National Level Water Conclave 2023. This campaign aligns with the theme of Sustainable Agriculture with an emphasis on millet cultivation, water conservation, and rainwater harvesting in industrial sectors. The government of India also aims to rejuvenate 75 water bodies in each district of the country.
The campaign was inaugurated with the slogan 'One drop, One Crop,' emphasizing the importance of conserving water for the future. Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Minister of State for the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, commended IIT Madras for its commitment to environmental sustainability.
V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, highlighted the critical role of water in sustaining life on Earth, from plant growth to human survival. He emphasized the essential nature of water in assessing the habitability of celestial bodies and the importance of sensitizing people to changing climatic conditions worldwide.
Professor Balaji Narasimhan, from the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Madras, stressed the need to move beyond rainwater harvesting and focus on water reuse and recycling. He cited a project in Chennai where sewage water is treated, rejuvenated, and supplied back to the city, demonstrating IIT Madras's dedication to sustainability and alignment with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
