According to Leading UK Higher Education Institutions’ report, there is a considerable and positive net impact on the economy of the United Kingdom (UK) because of international students, including Indians. The report, introduced in London on Tuesday, comes at a time when unease about a crackdown on international student visas as part of United Kingdom government measures to reduce immigration levels is scaling.

According to the 2020-2021 data, Indians are responsible for the second largest cohort of international students arriving to study at UK universities – with 87,045 first-year enrolments behind China’s 99,965 and ahead of Nigeria’s 32,945.

Considering the 2020-21 statistics, the report discloses a 96,000 pounds per non-European Union (EU) student advantage to the economy– including students from nations like India.

Partner at London Economic, Dr. Gavan Conlon, who has been authorized to conduct the analysis, said International students put nearly ten times more into the economy than they take out, boosting local and national economic well-being.

As per the UK media reports, Home Secretary Suella Braverman is looking to connect down on international students bringing in dependants as noticed as adding to soaring migration figures.

However, more recent census data has shown that Indians have surpassed the Chinese with regard to study visas. The new Graduate Route visa presented in July 2021 to permit international students the opportunity to stay on and work at the end of their qualification degree is considered the aspect behind this surge, and any clampdown on study visas is likely to make the UK less appealing to Indian students.
