Rishi Sunak Announced Maths as a Compulsory Subject till Age 18 in the UK to Tackle Innumeracy

In the wake to dive the growing innumeracy among students in England, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak declared to make Maths mandatory for students till they turn 18.



According to recent data, 8 million people in England have numeracy skills of elementary school children. In order to fight this, Rishi Sunak has announced educational reform concentrating more on Maths education.



Rishi Sunak gave his first speech of 2023 and disclosed plans to make Maths compulsory. Conventional A-Levels subject-based qualifications authorize high school students in England to select educational subjects to study between the ages of 16 and 18.



Currently, In England, school-based education is compulsory for students till the age of 16, after which students have choices like A-Levels or alternative qualifications, or vocational training, which they can select to seek further education.



As per the reports, further to tackle innumeracy, Rishi Sunak's Maths compulsion action also aims to help students with job prospects. Rishi Sunak said that right now, just half of all 16 and 19-year-olds study any maths at all. Yet, in a world where data is everywhere & statistics prop up every job, our student's jobs will need more analytical skills than ever before.



Rishi Sunak also said that the most important reason for him to join politics is to deliver quality education to every child. He said that every opportunity I have had in life started with the education I was so fortunate to receive. And it is the single most crucial reason why I came into politics: to provide every child the highest possible standard of education.
