Scottish Universities are offering free-of-cost education to Ukrainian refugees. Along with free tuition, the refugees will also receive living cost support, as subjected to parliamentary approval.

Under the Holyrood government's proposal, the Ukrainian refugees who wish to start their higher education this autumn in Scotland will be eligible for home fee status. Under this, the tuition fees which costs £1,820 for Undergraduate programmes will be covered by the administration.

To be eligible for additional living cost support which is up to 8,100 pounds a year in bursaries and loans, the applicants must apply to one of the Homes for Ukraine, Ukraine Extension, or Ukraine Family schemes.

Ukrainian students studying in Scotland who are experiencing hardship can apply for aid/ support from a newly founded '£1 million International Students' Emergency Fund'.

Higher Education Minister of Scotland Jamie Hepburn informed, "We are determined to do everything we can to give displaced people from Ukraine the warmest welcome possible". He also added that the aim is to provide some assurance and stability at this deeply troubling time.

The newly founded emergency fund will be open to any overseas learner who faces hardship as a consequence of persecution or conflict in their home country.

Scotland President of the National Union of Students Matt Crilly also welcomed the decision. He added, "Our places of education should always be safe havens for all those affected by war and persecution – this is a practical step towards this vision".

Earlier, a twinning initiative was announced by the Universities UK matching UK institutions with the equivalent in Ukraine. Under this, Ukrainian academics based in UK universities are allowed to teach Ukrainian students online and provide academic resources.
