On July 18, in Spaceport America Cup Intercollegiate Rocketry Competition held yearly in New Mexico, the USYD Rocketry Team was declared the overall winner of the competition. The team competed in the 30,000 feet Commercial Off-The-Shelf launch and payload varieties.

The team competed against 97 student teams across the globe, including the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, ETH Zurich, and the University of Sydney team, which stood in first place in three categories-

  • Taking out the first position for the launch of 30,000 feet commercial off-the-shelf rocket Bluewren.

  • They won the overall competition with the highest points

  • The first position for the design of space debris capture payload Callistemon.

After a long wait, the results were declared after three weeks due to a data recovery blunder.

Bluewren aviated to a peak of 29,993 feet over the New Mexico desert before auspiciously deploying the two parachutes, uninjured three kilometers from the launch site, and landing safely. University of Sydney team was praised by the Spaceport America Cup for their camaraderie, sportsmanship, rocket design, and launch.

The judges of Spaceport America Cup also commended the team's payload Callistemon for its outstanding performance throughout the launch and for being a creative and innovative solution to the growing expansion issues of space junk.
