Spain focuses on improving the number of African students studying in Spanish schools and higher education institutions. Spain's new aim on Africa is expressed in a policy document entitled Focus Africa, 2023. Spain mainly aims to boost more profound diplomatic and economic ties with African countries in order to promote peace and stability in the region.
Previously, Spain has struggled a lot in dealing with an enormous stream of illegal migrants who have been forced to return to their region because of poverty and violence. Spain collaborates with Africa to improve its education system as this would expand a different pool of migrants. Because of this initiative by Spain, students with adequate schooling to succeed in Spanish higher education and qualified workers contribute to the Spanish economy.
There's a plan of eighty pages that indicates the approach for collaborating with African countries to achieve greater stability and assets. China, on the other hand, has invested billions into Africa in recent years to sponsor a spectrum of economic development projects and infrastructure. China's multi-branched investment into Africa was a strategic long-term game plan that has already resulted in strengthening the economy with the help of skilled workers and students.
The ability of Chinese institutions to recruit international students has been hindered by the tight border policies which the Chinese government has maintained throughout the pandemic. Because of this, other countries have gotten the opportunity to claim more share of African students, especially Spain and France.
France has been the world's leading enrollment of African students. According to recent reports, students from different places such as the Republic of Congo, the Ivory Coast, Gabon, Benin, Senegal, and Cameroon are progressively determining to register in French institutions.
Vladimir Putin has continually emphasized his affirmation of the region, especially in the context of his aggression against Ukraine. Also, there'll be a massive loss to Ukraine's economy because of its failure to recruit in Africa due to the war between Ukraine and Russia.
On the other hand, Russia has also been showing active interest in recruiting African students. Also, there'll be a massive loss to Ukraine's economy because of its failure to recruit in Africa due to the war between Ukraine and Russia. Thus, countries other than Spain have also set their sights on Africa for the same purposes.
Previous summer, a seminar series entitled Cooperation Academica Espana-Africa was conducted by the Spanish government to discuss the task ahead for Spain. The seminar was about how to boost the small population of students from Africa surrounded by competition from other countries such as France and China. As per the reports of the seminar, only 352 Sub-Saharan African students came, which is a crouched number in contrast to that of Latin America (14,615), Northern America (671), and Asia (5,050). Alluring African students to Master level studies would be a genuine focus for Spain. The government report on the economic impact of international students in 2020 shows that master-level programs contribute the most to the Spanish economy.
