UGC- The University Grants Commission directed all universities and colleges to actively participate in celebrating the International Year of Millets (IYoM) 2023.

According to the letter issued by UGC, the commission asked the HEIs (Higher Education Institutions) to offer a list of events they have undertaken and ones they suggest holding to mark this celebration. The letter by UGC also asked for relevant authorities to attach videos and photos of celebrations or events already undertaken.

The list of events must be shared with cdn.edu@nic.in as per the attached annexure with the letter. In an earlier letter dated November 2021, the commission had asked all HEIs to take measures like the following to mark IYoM 2023,

Hold awareness programmes in order to emphasise the health miracles of millet, which are known to help deal with issues like obesity and diabetes.

Boosting consumption of millet through banners and posters put up across campuses. Adding millets in the diet charts of canteens of higher education institutions.

Hosting events like debates, lectures, and quizzes on the significance of millets for health and the environment," said the UGC.

In line with these recommendations, in September this year, the UGC shared a month-wise calendar of activities to be carried out in HEIs. This calendar contained activities like lecture series, training programs, industrial visits, Rangoli, and slogan writing competitions.

India is spreading particular focus on the International Year of Millets (IYoM) celebrations as it was the one that suggested dedicating a year to millets. The concept behind the proposition was to commit a year to generate awareness about the benefits of nutritious, climate-resilient millets across the globe.

Another purpose of marking the year was to encourage all stakeholders to work towards enhancing the production and productivity of millets globally. The proposal received approval and support from 72 member countries. The United Nations announced 2023 as the International Year of Millets on March 5, 2021.
