UNESCO International Literacy Prizes are awarded for innovation and excellence in the stream of literacy. More than 495 programmes and projects assumed by individuals, governments and non-government organizations around the globe have been recognized under this initiative.
The aim is to award the idea and practice that supports effective literacy and to invigorate the promotion of vigorous literate societies.
In present, there are two UNESCO International Literacy Prizes which are awarded to the recipients:
The UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize which was established with the assistance of the Government of the Republic of Korea in 1989 to give particular consideration to the use and development of mother-tongue literacy education and training. There are 02 awards under this section.
The UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy was established with the assistance of the Government of the People's Republic of China in 2005 to give particular consideration to literacy for out of school youth and adults belonging to rural areas. There are 03 awards under this section.
All of the five recipients are awarded with a diploma, a medal and US$ 20.000.
The 2020 Laureates were announced on 01 September by the Director-General of UNESCO. The recipients' names are mentioned below:
The UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize: 1) Ageing Nepal for program 'Basic Literacy Class for Older Persons' and 2) United World Schools in UK for the program 'Providing Non-Burmese Speaking Out-of-School Children with Access to Education'.
The UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy: 1) Just Commit Foundation for the program 'Inspirational Business Stories'; 2) University Center for Social Participation for the program 'Literacy Program- Learning by Teaching'; and 3) General Literacy Office in Sanaa for the program 'Educating and Integrating Refugees in Literacy Classes in Yemeni Society'.
