Dr. Shakuntala Haraksing Thilsted has won the prestigious World Food Prize 2021 for her groundbreaking research in agriculture. She won the award for developing comprehensive, nutrition-sensitive approaches to food systems and aquaculture.

A global nutrition expert of Indian descent, her innovative research on Bangladesh's small native fish species has steered towards the development of nutrition-sensitive ways to aquatic food systems of all levels. This will result in enhanced diet for millions of the most vulnerable people in Africa and Asia.

Thilsted is a citizen of Denmark and a native of Trinidad & Tobago.

About World Food Prize:

The objective of the Prize is to recognize the individuals' achievements who have done exceptional work in human development by improving the quantity, quality & availability of food across the world. It also recognizes the contributions made in the world food supply in any stream such as plant, animal & soil science; rural development; nutrition; marketing; water and the environment; food processing and packaging; policy analysis; physical infrastructure, etc.

The Prize is sponsored by various companies and is awarded annually each October on World Food Day. It is open for every individual. The recipient receives a cash prize worth of $250,000 and a sculpture designed by a noted artist Saul Bass.
