The GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) exams got cancelled this year by the authorities due to the corona pandemic in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
In England, the grades will be 'standardised'. For grading, the consideration will be given to teachers' evaluation, class rankings, students prior attained marks in GCSE & SATS and performance in schools in recent years.
The 'Standardisation' means adjusting scores downward by an algorithm which has been a controversial point. The Ofqual, England's exam regulator, has published an analysis stating that around 39% of grades will be downgraded. As per the report, this year's result will be directly proportional to the previous year's result which means 'rapidly improving schools' could be penalised for the poor previous results.
