According to the Gujarat police, In July, seven men were caught from north Gujarat by US immigration officers as they were attempting to enter New York via the Quebec route illegally. Men were of age 20 and 25 from Mehsana and Gandhinagar. But most of them were from Mehsana. They had gone to Canada in the second week of July, risking crossing over into the US. The US Immigration and Custom Enforcement officers arrested them while entering new York through the Quebec route.

The seven of them are under imprisonment in Albany and facing charges under the Alien act. Police are continuously trying to gather information about their families but to no avail. The family members stated they were unaware of their plan to cross into the US illegally. As per the reports, the seven youths had obtained fake IELTS certificates and traveled to Canada on student visas with the help of a local agent in Mehsana and his counterpart in Delhi.

On May 5, officers rescued six of them when the boat began to sink in the St Regis River along the Canada-US border. Later, a local court spared them from criminal proceedings and asked them to advise their countrymen not to enter the US illegally.
