The Assam government has consolidated the Department of Elementary Education and the Department of Secondary Education into one department called the 'Department of School Education. Dr. Ranoj Pegu, Assam Education Minister, stated that education under the National Education Policy (NEP 2020)- is divided into school and higher education.

Dr. Pegu stated that earlier in school education, we had two departments- the Department of Elementary Education and the Department of Secondary Education. But at the central ministry level, there is the Department of School Education. Dr. Pegu added that in the line with the department under the Ministry of Human Resources, we merged the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education into one department of School Education, and this is in line with NEP 2020.

Talking about the enforcement of the new National Education Policy (NEP 2020), the Assam Education Minister said that the Assam government has already commenced the introduction of 4-year degree courses in colleges.

Pegu further said that a few months back, the state cabinet approved the 4-year degree course in line with NEP, and they will implement this course from 2023. The degree is a student-centric programme and where every year if the student completes the semesters then they can earn a certificate in the first year, a diploma in the second year, a Bachelor's degree without honor's & research in the third year, and after completion of the fourth year, they can obtain a degree with honor's and research. He added that the Universities have already begun their curriculum.

The Assam Education Minister further said that there are a large number of schools in Assam with unsustainable registration. So the state government is integrating those schools having an unsustainable enrollment.
