On Tuesday, a minister said that the Assam government would appoint over 4,700 persons in different posts in the Education Department as part of a mega recruitment drive on September 23.

Education Minister Ranoj Pegu stated that appointment letters for 4,717 posts in his department would be handed over during the function on Friday. He told reporters that most of these posts are of teachers from school to college levels. Apart from teachers, vacancies in other job positions will also be filled up during the exercise.

Pegu said the list contains the names of 1,298 teachers who had proceeded to the Gauhati High Court over a grace mark matter after the court exited its stay order on their appointments. He added that out of the total posts, 3,811 would be in schools, 803 in higher education, and 103 in technical education sectors.

Assam government will deliver appointment letters to around 12,000 youths on September 23 in different departments in a mega recruitment exercise in Guwahati.

The minister also said that Education Department would publish a ‘White Paper’ covering all areas such as college, school, and technical education. He informed that since 2011, tremendous reforms have taken place in the Education Department. More than two lakh appointments were given. A massive amount of infrastructure development is going on. That is why we have determined to bring out a White Paper in our department. Pegu said that work on the intended White Paper is going on, and it is anticipated to be released within the next two months.

When asked about closing down government-run schools, the Education minister stated that the department got proposals to amalgamate 1,710 schools with other nearby institutions from the districts. He added- they received around 300 applications requesting us not to amalgamate those concerned schools. They mentioned different reasons for these 300 schools like historic significance or named after some meaningful personalities or physical difficulties in going to the new school. Pegu also informed that a central committee has been assembled to look after these requests, and they will decide on every case individually.

Later he said that during the last exercise a few years ago, we provincialized teachers but did not handle the schools. So, there was a query about what would happen to those schools. We will combine those schools this time, he said.

He said the entire exercise of merging will be carried out without breaking the Right to Education of the children.

Provincialisation means the government taking over all disadvantages of a non-government school, which was established with the only objective of imparting education in order to serve the society, for payment of salaries and other advantages to the teachers.
