The Central Board of Secondary Education has taken the decision to shift to its earlier practice of holding the board exams only once a year. The Board will continue the previous practice for Class 10 and Class 12 Board Exams from the 2022-23 academic year onwards.

The board was considering continuing the two-term exam practice in the future as well since the process is also recommended in the NEP (National Education Policy) 2020.

However, a senior official informed, "Even as the NEP 2020 favours two-term exams, it has been decided to switch to the previous practice for now and conduct one set of board exams at the end of the academic year". He added that the stakeholders are suggesting one exam policy as well. He also added that the board conducted two-term exams to prevent any unprecedented situation caused by the COVID pandemic.

Principals of CBSE-affiliated schools and their students also welcomed the decision.

Earlier, the authorities also announced that the school-leaving board exams will no longer be considered for admissions to several states and all central universities. The Common University Entrance Test, a centrally conducted admission test, will be considered for admissions from this year.
