Ramdas Athawale, Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, announced that a huge amount of Rs. 59,000 crores for scholarships has been earmarked for backward classes in Assam. The scholarships have been reserved for the duration of five years.



The announcement for the scholarship scheme was made while reviewing the implementation of various other schemes of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. Athawale, during the press conference, also mentioned, "Out of this amount, 60 per cent will be from the Centre and 40 per cent from the state. Post this, every year, there will be an increase of five per cent of the Centre's share till the share reaches 80 per cent".



The Minister also informed that the state's 07 per cent population belong to the SC (Scheduled Caste) community and 15 per cent to the Tribals community and the government is committed to grant the scholarships to all the eligible candidates.
