The ruling Democratic party has initiated a Citizenship Act, which among other things, aims to eliminate the country quota for green cards and make changes in the much sought-after H-1B visa system.

The United States (US) Citizenship Act 2023, presented by Congresswoman Linda Sanchez, forms a committed roadmap to citizenship for all 11 million undocumented immigrants, offering Dreamers, TPS holders, and some farmworkers a path to citizenship.

It also seeks to offer undocumented immigrants who pass background checks and pay taxes a five-year path to citizenship without worrying about deportation. It aims to make changes to the employment-based immigration procedure by eradicating per-country caps.

The US Citizenship Act seeks to make it more uncomplicated for Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) advanced degree holders from US universities to stay, enhancing access to green cards for employees in lower-wage industries, providing dependents of H-1B holders work permission, and controlling children of H-1B holders from ageing out of the system. It stops bias facing LGBTQ+ families, delivers protection for orphans, and authorizes immigrants with approved family-sponsorship petitions to join families in the United States temporarily while they wait for green cards.
