Today, August 21, 2023, Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister, D.K. Shivakumar, revealed a significant shift in the state's educational direction. Speaking at a press conference hosted at the administrative headquarters in Bengaluru, Shivakumar disclosed the government's decision to diverge from the national education policy introduced in 2021. This decision, he explained, stemmed from a desire to craft an education framework that aligns more discreetly with the distinct educational demands of Karnataka.

Shivakumar explained that the Karnataka government had undertaken comprehensive deliberations with key stakeholders, including vice-chancellors and eminent academicians, in addition to government officials. Despite the nationwide launch of the education policy in 2021, it is noteworthy that none of the states governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have displayed enthusiasm for its integration. Moreover, states such as Kerala and Tamil Nadu have overtly rejected the adoption of the National Education Policy (NEP).

The Karnataka state government is ready to introduce a homegrown education policy. This novel policy, anticipated to come into effect in the forthcoming year, reflects Karnataka's unique ethos and educational requisites. In a bid to realize this vision, a committee is scheduled to be established within the coming week. This committee will be entrusted with the task of formulating and shaping the new educational framework. This initiative aims to empower Karnataka's educational institutions with a policy that echoes more harmoniously with its cultural, social, and intellectual fabric.
