Dr R Bindu, the Higher Education Minister of Kerala, has released the released the first uniform sign language alphabet in Malayalam. This initiative would bring a complete shift in the hearing-impaired people's life, ahe added.



The All Kerala Association of the Deaf in collaboration with the Thiruvananthapuram-based National Institute of Speech and Hearing has developed the alphabet.



Dr. Bindu called the initiative a 'proud achievement'. She also added that the General Education Department will soon initiate the discussions regarding the usage of the sign alphabet in Special Schools across the state.



At present, only Hindi and English alphabets in sign language are present. She also added that thses Malayalam alphabets will provide immense exposure for the deaf community.



To ensure mental and physical support to the hearing impaired people, all potential technology will be provided so that they can lead a normal life.



She further added that NISH will be fully supported by the state government in becoming a global institution.



The announcement was made on the occasion of the International Week of the Deaf.
