According to the officials, the Ministry of Education has shortlisted about 9,000 schools for its Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme. The schools were selected from around 2.5 lakh government schools, including Navodaya Vidyalayas and Kendriya Vidyalayas, which were found suitable to apply for the tag.

Officials said they were considered based on six broad parameters:

  1. Curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment

  2. Access and infrastructure

  3. Human resources – leadership

  4. Inclusive practices and gender equity

  5. Management, monitoring, and governance

  6. Beneficiary satisfaction.

A senior Ministry of Education official said we shortlisted about 9000 schools. We are very happy with them and will be announcing the names of the schools very soon.

Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) school is a new scheme aiming to develop more than 14500 schools across the country by boosting select existing schools being supervised by all forms of government. The PM SHRI schools aim to deliver quality teaching for the cognitive development of students and create and nurture holistic and well-rounded individuals equipped with essential 21st-century skills.

However, seven Indian states are yet to sign MoUs with the Education Ministry to elevate their schools under the PM-SHRI scheme announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 5 last year.

The Centre has reached out to authorities in seven states and Union Territories, mainly Delhi, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Bihar, Odisha, and Jharkhand, encouraging them to come along and adopt the scheme and provide quality education for all students.

The official said in a letter to these concerned states and Union Territories- the Education minister has suggested that effective execution of this scheme will allow the depiction of all elements of National Education Policy 2020 to assure quality education for our students and allow these PM SHRI schools to represent as exemplary schools for quality education in the nation.
