Several scientists, science teachers, and other educators have expressed grave concern about the NCERT's decision to remove the theory of biological evolution from the CBSE Class X science curriculum. Understanding the process of evolution they argue, is "crucial in developing a scientific temper," and denying students this exposure is a "travesty of education."
After NCERT announced its decision to remove the theory of biological evolution from the CBSE class X science syllabus, several scientists, science teachers, and other educators expressed concern. They believe that understanding the evolution process is "crucial in developing a scientific temper," and that denying students this exposure is a "travesty of education."
Breakthrough Science Society, a nationwide voluntary organization dedicated to the cause of science, culture, and scientific outlook, has issued an open letter titled 'An Appeal Against Exclusion of Evolution from Curriculum' in support of the same.
The topics dropped in this chapter are Charles Robert Darwin, the Origin of Life on Earth, Molecular Phylogeny, Evolution, and Tracing The Evolutionary Relationships. CBSE, which oversees the curriculum for schools affiliated with it, has removed several chapters from the curriculum.
The scientists and educators who signed the open letter argued that taking off the chapter on evolution violates scientific reasoning and rational thinking principles. They also claim that removing the chapter will harm students' understanding of the world.
"Knowledge and understanding of evolutionary biology are critical not only to any subfield of biology but also to understanding the world around us." Evolutionary biology is a branch of science that has a significant impact on how we choose to deal with a wide range of problems that societies and nations face, including medicine and drug discovery, epidemiology, ecology and environment, and psychology, as well as our understanding of humans and their place in the tapestry of life. Although many of us are unaware of it, the principles of natural selection help us understand how a pandemic spreads or why certain species become extinct, among many other critical issues," the letter states.
