The validity of the Teacher Eligibility Tests, including the Central Teacher Eligibility Test, has been extended by the NCTE (National Council for Teacher Education) from seven years to the Lifetime. The decision was taken by the NCTE during their 50th meeting of General Body held on 29 September 2020.

"This provision would have prospective effect and for those who have already passed out (already having TET certificate), NCTE will take legal opinion and will act accordingly," stated the minutes of the meeting circulated on 13 October.

The objective of the decision is to attain coordinated and planned development of the teacher education system across the nation, the proper maintenance and directive of norms in the teacher education system. The extensive directives have been provided to the NCTE which blankets all the teacher education programmes including their training and research providing them to teach at all stages in schools, formal and non-formal education, part-time and distance education and adult education programmes among others.
