The National Medical Commission (NMC) has reversed its earlier decision to lower the passing marks for the MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) examination to 40%. This reversal follows a period of deliberation and discussions among stakeholders in the medical education field.

According to the revised CBME guidelines introduced on September 1, the NMC stipulated that "In subjects that have two papers, the learner must secure a minimum of 40 percent of marks in aggregate (both papers combined) to pass in the said subject."

This revision marked a departure from the previous passing criteria and generated considerable attention and debate within the medical education community. Critics expressed concerns that lowering the passing threshold could potentially affect the rigor and quality of medical education in India.

However, according to the latest development, the NMC has withdrawn this decision to reduce the passing marks to 40 percent, signaling a return to the previous passing standards. This reversal comes following extensive discussions and considerations among various stakeholders, including educators, students, and healthcare professionals.

The decision to reinstate the earlier passing marks underscores the NMC's commitment to maintaining high educational standards and ensuring that medical professionals trained in India meet rigorous criteria to deliver quality healthcare services. It reflects the commission's responsiveness to concerns raised within the medical community and its dedication to upholding the integrity of medical education in the country.
