Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal, Union Education Minister, has approved the release of PGI (Performance Grading Index) 2019-20 for states/ UTs. The Index has been introduced by the Govt with a set of 70 parameters to bring about transformational changes in the school education department.

The Performance Grading Index: States/ Union Territories for 2019-20 is the 3rd publication as the first publication of the Index was released in 2019 with reference year 2017-18.

The PGI exercise envisions that the index would drive States and UTs towards assuring the multifarious interventions that catalyse the much-desired outcomes for optimal education. The Index helps in recognizing the gaps and prioritise areas accordingly for interference to make sure that the school education system is robust at each level.

Punjab, Chandigarh, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala has occupied the highest grade i.e. Grade A++, as reported through the statement. The statement further added that Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Punjab, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu have improved their PGI score by 10%.

13 states/ UTs have shown improvement by 10% or more in the PGI domain in Infrastructure and Facilities whereas 20% or more improvement have been shown by the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Odisha.

Over 10% improvement has been shown by Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, and Manipur in the PGI domain in Equity.

19 states/ UTs have shown improvement by 10% or more in the PGI domain in Governance Process.
