Ankit Agarwal, an assistant professor at the Department of Hydrology, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IIT Roorkee), has been granted the Outstanding Early Career Scientist Award by the European Geosciences Union for his contributions to the domain of hydroclimatic extremes. Professor Agarwal is the first Indian to receive the Outstanding Early Career Scientist Award.

EGU president Irina M Artemieva granted the award to Professor Agarwal during the EGU General Assembly 2023, carried out in Vienna, Austria, from April 23-28, 2023. The Natural Hazards Division of the European Geosciences Union has identified the professor for his substantial research in complexity science for better understanding, quantifying, and anticipating hydroclimatic extremes.

Head of the Department of Hydrology Professor Brijesh Kumar Yadav complimented Agarwal and applauded his dedicated research philosophy and student-centered approach. He also honored his commitment to promoting science among underprivileged researchers globally and aspiring for equitable opportunities.

On being awarded the award, Professor Agarwal said I am obliged and like to represent my appreciation towards the EGU, my mentors, coworkers, and students and dedicate the prize to the Department of Hydrology, IIT Roorkee. The significance of collaborative research on preparing against such hazards before they become disasters and how lives and property can be saved is the objective behind predicting hydroclimatic extremes and contributing to humankind by educating people.

Director, IIT Roorkee Professor K K Pant said, I congratulate Professor Ankit Agarwal for his contribution to the domain of Hydrology. His research is a critical reminder of how hazards and disasters originate from interactions between environmental and social procedures, so interdisciplinary research is essential in understanding and effectively addressing them. A better insight into interdisciplinary teamwork can have significant practical advantages for operational disaster planning and response.
