Since the entrance examination for admissions into M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes have been scrapped due to the corona pandemic, the Punjab University has taken the decision to enroll only those students who have qualified UGC NET (National Eligibility Test), SLET (State Level Eligibility Test), JRF (Junior Research Fellowship), and GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering).

In addition, the candidates who have qualified the national-level fellowship or scholarship tests conducted across India on the behalf of recognized institutions will also be considered. Candidates having valid PhD scores of PU will also be eligible for admission.

The Committee of M.Phil and Ph.D. set up the recommendations for Ph.D enrolments and the guidelines were composed by Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor. After the VC's approval, the information was conveyed to the heads of the teaching depts. and the deans of the faculties by RK Singla, DUI.

The Panjab University has also scrapped the PU-CET (PG) entrance exam and students got admission on the basis of merit.

As per the UGC's (University Grants Commission) recommendations, the universities are required to conduct the entrance exam for admissions into MPhil and PhD programmes.
