On Thursday, students at Allahabad University took out a massive protest against the recent fee hike carrying flaming torches and shouting slogans & demanding the reinstatement of the students' union.

A bunch of students under the banner of 'Chhatrasangh Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti' have been protesting the fee hike at Allahabad University as the university has boosted the undergraduate fees by almost 400 percent, which is unacceptable to the students.

Eight days ago, some of the students undertook a hunger strike. Yesterday, two students, Rahul Saroj, and Manjit Patel, were admitted to the hospital after their health worsened due to protesting for so many days.

Firm on their request for a rollback of the raised fees, the students marched through the campus and eventually assembled in front of a statue of Independence movement icon Chandrashekhar Azad. The students also took a commitment/pledge at the freedom fighter's statue- that the turmoil would continue until the university satisfy their demands.

The protest against the fee hike movement triumphed with the support of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra earlier this week. Supporting the students, Ms. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra tweeted on Monday that The 400 percent fee hike by Allahabad University is another anti-youth action by the BJP government.

She added that children from ordinary families from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar study at the university- by increasing the fees, the government will take away an extensive source of education from these youth. She added that the government should immediately withdraw the decision of raising the fees after listening to the students.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also supported the students of Allahabad University. Calling student unions a primary part of democracy- Mr. Akhilesh stated that the university's treatment of the protesting students is a sign of hopelessness from the BJP government.
