UGC- University Grants Commission has issued an advisory for students- wishing to seek admission into Open distance learning (ODL) programmes. These exemplary guidelines range from the status of the Higher Education Institution to restricted courses.

In light of (UGC)s recent amendment, which has made degrees acquired through ODL online programme now at par with the degrees received through the conventional mode, the commission has issued guidelines for students to keep in view while enrolling for ODL programmes.

As per the guidelines, University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked students to ensure that the status of the HEI they wish to apply for is approved by the commission.

Students must check the list of colleges banned by UGC and have been put under the ‘no admission category’ of the commission. UGC has also recommended students to assure they are not registering for a course that has been restricted to carried out via online or ODL mode. Programmes such as engineering, physiotherapy, pharmacy, nursing, law, medical, agriculture, catering technology, aircraft maintenance, horticulture, visual arts, hotel management, and sports are not permitted to be held or carried out in ODL mode.

The commission has also banned state, central, private, and deemed universities from providing ODL programmes via franchising arrangements in order to enroll more students.

Students have also been suggested to guarantee that the minimum duration of the course, qualification, nomenclature, and other standards for ODL programmes are as per the guidelines and measures issued by the commission.
