The Uttar Pradesh Govt has taken the decision to launch a 45 day 'Reading Campaign'. The campaign is being launched to inculcate reading habits among the children and it will start from Nov 01.

The Department of Basic Education has also released the directives to 75 districts' education officers regarding the campaign. The aim of the initiative an enjoyable reading culture among children by ensuring accessibility to age-appropriate books in vernacular and local languages.

Vijay Kiran, the Director-General of School Education, has also directed all officers to make learning material accessible including activity calenders and infographics in schools to encourage reading. The officials also added that the foundation learning is the base of all education and the lack of these skills i.e. writing, reading comprehension, and basic numeracy makes the kids unprepared to face the curriculum complexities beyond Standard 03.

Several researchers including NAS (National Achievement Survey) have also highlighted that a great number of students are unable to to read even a simple passage. Anand added, "The campaign, therefore, is initiated so that each child learns to read and thereafter, can read to learn".

Earlier, the Central Government, in collaboration with the Dept of Literacy and School Education, also launched a 100-day reading campaign 'Padhe Bharat' across the nation to promote the reading activities among the young generation.
