West Bengal Govt Constitutes Panel to Explore the Possibility of Introducing Medicine Diploma Course

On May 12, 2023, a senior official informed that the government of West Bengal formed a 14-member committee in order to explore the possibility of introducing a diploma course in medicine with three years of classroom and practical training. On Thursday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee proposed coming up with a diploma course/programme in medicine, aiming at fighting a shortfall of doctors in hospitals in West Bengal.



The official also disclosed that the panel instituted by the government includes senior doctors and representatives from the (IMA)- Indian Medical Association and the (WBMC)- West Bengal Medical Council.



He added that in order to enhance access to healthcare facilities, particularly in rural areas, the state government has assembled an expert committee that will be responsible to explore the possibility of developing healthcare professionals/experts with three years of classroom and practical training. The newly formed panel will now submit its report within 30 days.
