Indian Scientists, in collaboration with Scientists from Russia, China, and Brazil, will execute genomic sequencing of SARS-CoV-2. They will also carry out studies on the epidemiology and mathematical modelling of the COVID-19. This study will help in tracing the genetic mutations, recombinations and distribution of the COVID virus. It will also help in making future projections of its spread.

To identify the genetic mutations and recombinations of the virus a whole-genome sequencing is needed, whereas the epidemiological studies help in assessing its distribution. Mathematical modelling is needed to evaluate its future spread.

A research plan has also been made by the included scientists and engineers. A consortium consisting of the following members will carry out different arms of this BRICS-Multilateral Research and Development Project:

  • Dr Ch Sasikala, Professor, Centre for Environment, Institute of Science and Technology, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad,

  • Yuhua Xin, Professorate Senior Engineer Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China,

  • Ivan Sobolev, Senior Researcher, Federal Research Center of Fundamental and Translational Medicine, Timakova, Russia,

  • Dr Marilda Mendonça Siqueira, Respiratory Viruses and Measles Laboratory, Oswaldo Cruz Institute, Fiocruz., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This research is being supported by the Department of Science and Technology.

The scientists from India and Brazil will evaluate the distribution of SARS-CoV-2 in environmental samples through metagenome analysis for WBE (Wastewater-Based Epidemiology) surveillance. The scientists from China and Russia will carry out the Real-Time or RT PCR detection of SARS-CoV-2 in biological material such as nasopharyngeal swabs from patients having symptoms of respiratory diseases to explore the comparative genomics, genomic variability, and phylogenetic analysis.

This genomic, epidemiological, and metagenomic data will be consolidated to develop mathematical models which will help in mutations analysis, phylogenetic relationship, population genetics, recombination analysis and risk evaluation. This will also reveal the virus's expansion network and dynamics.

This can also help in tracing the spread dynamics and routes of the virus.

This collaborative research plan has been developed from the Institute of Microbiology, Federal Research Centre of Fundamental and Translational Medicine of Russia, Chinese Academy of Sciences of China, and Respiratory Virus and Measles Laboratory, Oswaldo Cruz Institute of Brazil.

The objective of the collaboration is to provide a universal platform to share and analyse the data of 04 different nations to recognize the virus's spread routes and transmission dynamics.
