The University Grants Commission (UGC) has urged Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) to address the rising concern of drug addiction among students and youth. Recognizing the vulnerability of this demographic to substance abuse, the UGC has emphasized the pivotal role HEIs can play in combating this issue.

In a bid to sensitize the campus environment and surrounding areas, the UGC has recommended that HEIs initiate various measures at the institutional level. These include conducting regular interventions and activities focused on substance use prevention within the campus.

Highlighting the gravity of drug addiction in many HEIs and its adverse impact on the youth, an official notification from the UGC referenced the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment's Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA). This nationwide initiative aims to reduce drug demand by overseeing various aspects of drug abuse, prevention, assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and public awareness.

The UGC has outlined several proactive steps for HEIs to adopt in their efforts. This includes establishing clubs dedicated to activities such as discouraging ragging, promoting substance-free lifestyles, and advocating safety protocols. Additionally, the commission has proposed utilizing informational and educational materials, along with implementing best practices to raise awareness.

Moreover, as a part of encouraging responsible behavior among students, the UGC has suggested incorporating an anti-drug declaration during admission. This measure seeks to instill a commitment in students to maintain responsible conduct throughout their academic journey.
