In a groundbreaking move, India's National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has launched a sweeping initiative to revamp the Social Science syllabus for Classes 6 to 12. Heading this endeavor is a 35-member committee, led by the esteemed Michel Danino, operating under the National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC).

Merging Expertise for Educational Reform

This committee, comprising influential figures such as Sanjeev Sanyal, Banabina Brahma, MD Srinivas, and others from diverse educational and research backgrounds, is tasked with a monumental mission. Their collective goal is to craft comprehensive syllabi and teaching materials encompassing history, geography, political science, sociology, and psychology.

Guided by the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020

Aligned with the aspirations of the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020, this initiative aims to establish an educational continuum. Emphasis is placed on maintaining consistency across grades, forging interdisciplinary connections, and seamlessly integrating cross-cutting themes within social science subjects. The committee endeavors to provide teacher handbooks by February 25, 2024.

The NSTC is ready to establish 11 Curriculum Advisory Groups (CAGs) covering various subject domains. These groups, currently active in innovative pedagogy, teaching-learning material, Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), and social sciences, work collaboratively to ensure curriculum coherence across different grade levels. Their efforts foster interdisciplinary harmony and embed cross-cutting themes within social science subjects.

NCERT underscores the significance of vertical and horizontal integration across social science disciplines. Specifically, the CAGs - Social Science and Economics - actively engage in mutual exchange and discussion of drafts to achieve seamless integration. This concerted effort aims to create a cohesive and enriched educational experience for students.
