The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has announced a game-changing initiative – the 'Sports Excellence Admission' (SEA) quota for its undergraduate programmes, effective from the academic year 2024-2025. This forward-thinking move aims to allocate two additional seats in each undergraduate programme to foster female talent in sports.
A novel aspect of this initiative is the creation of a unique 'Sports Rank List' (SRL), where candidates will be evaluated based on their overall scores derived from their performance in a specific list of sports. The seat allocation under the sports quota will be conducted in accordance with this dedicated rank list.
Candidates aiming for admission through SEA will still need to qualify for JEE Advanced. However, the application and allocation process will be managed through a dedicated portal established by IIT Madras, accessible at jeeadv.iitm.ac.in/sea/.
To qualify for SEA, candidates must not only secure a position in the Common Rank List (CRL) or category-wise rank list in JEE Advanced but also showcase their prowess by winning at least one medal in a national or international-level sports competition within the last four years.
In addition to this groundbreaking admission policy, IIT Madras is set to elevate its sports infrastructure with the introduction of an advanced sports complex, as revealed by Director V. Kamakoti.
This pioneering step by IIT Madras in introducing the sports quota recognizes and celebrates excellence in sports and encourages talented individuals to pursue higher education while continuing to shine in their respective sporting domains.
