UGC chairman said students play a critical role in this transformative procedure. They are a pivotal part of the education system. To improve students' participation and create understanding around the different reforms in the higher education system as summarized in the National Education Policy, the UGC is introducing a new approach, 'NEP Saarthi - Student Ambassador for Academic Reforms in Transforming Indian Higher Education.
"Through the initiative NEP Saarthi, the UGC seeks to promote an environment where students can engage meaningfully and bring students together as enthusiastic participants to make effective usage of provisions of the National Education Policy," Kumar said. UGC has asked the vice-chancellors, directors, and principals of higher education institutions to appoint three students from their institutions (pursuing any programme) to be selected as NEP Saarthis.
The selected students are expected to have outstanding qualities, maintain excellent communication skills, organisational abilities for leading outreach programmes, creativity, sense of responsibility along with being a team leader. "Each institute may select up to three students to be regarded as NEP Saarthi, along with a short write-up explaining the nominations.
UGC will choose 300 NEP Saarthis from among the candidates. They will receive guidance to carry out their functions effectively from the UGC in a hybrid mode," Kumar said. The NEP Saarthis will operate as an ambassador to encourage National Education Policy 2020.
Their position will include creating awareness and spreading information about NEP 2020, enabling NEP initiatives on social media, gathering feedback from students to enhance the enactment of the NEP, deliver guidance to students and other stakeholders about policy approaches and how they can profit from them.
"The NEP Saarthis will arrange awareness campaigns regarding the latest National Education Policy initiatives; prepare brief notes on each NEP initiative for display on campus; connect with student groups; establish meaningful discussion among students, faculty members, administrators, and the University Grants Commission; plan various events, competitions, debates, quizzes, discussions, nukkads, chaupals; commence social media activities or campaigns and arranged up NEP help desks at college events," Kumar added.
