On Saturday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal inaugurated the first school in Delhi in order to train students for the armed forces. Shaheed Bhagat Singh Armed Forces Preparatory School at Jharoda Kalan in Najafgarh presently has 175 students. Kejriwal asked the students to assimilate the emotion of living and dying for the nation.

The school has an exclusive services preliminary wing to teach officer-like qualities (OLQs) to students via group and individual tasks, personality development workshops, mock interviews, and psychometric tests. The students will get a free-cost hostel facility with a cadet mess for boys and girls and are part of the School of Specialised Excellence (Delhi government) and affiliated with the Delhi Board of School Education. Officials informed that the school is open to all Delhi residents, and students can reserve their seats in Classes 9 and 11. Arvind Kejriwal stated that the classes will commence today, besides special education, students will get four-year-long training and coaching for the National Defence Academy and similar competitions without any fee.

Arvind Kejriwal stated that the school provides services that one cannot get even in the poshest schools. 80 to 90 percent of the students in the school belong to government schools. He added that education is entirely free in their schools and all children get the same facilities to eliminate the rich and poor divide.

Kejriwal said that the school was built within a year, and they have surpassed their expectations. He further added- A couple of years back, we learned how Delhi has no Sainik School to train cadets for the army. Within a period of one year, we built this school and even exceeded our expectations. The school also proposes comprehensive preparation (academic and service preparatory) for students desiring to join the NDA/Naval Academy and other Uniformed Services.

While recalling his student days at IIT-Kharagpur, from where he passed out in 1989, Kejriwal said that many students used to prepare on their own and appear for tests like NDA and other entrance exams. Other states had Sainik Schools, but Delhi never had any schools of that kind. At that time, only I thought of doing something for the nation. A lot of students went abroad to study and settled there. It is our own motherland, and we have to work for it. He added- I will live, fight and die here for the betterment of the country.

He reported that over 18,000 applications were received this year for admission to the school. The school involves a three-stage admission procedure — an aptitude test, physical endurance tests, psychometric tests, and a medical fitness test in the third stage. He added that your children have floated over such a tough competition and the credit for their success goes to you as well. I pray to the Almighty that all students get selected for the NDA or whichever entrance exam they prepare for.

The chief minister said they would also invite the experts like retired and serving officers of the Armed Forces in order to train students. He stated that naming the school after Shaheed Bhagat Singh was a well-thought decision as he sacrificed his life at a very young age of 23 by getting hanged. In today’s time, boys are looking for a girlfriend or a job at 23. He stated- We named this school after Bhagat Singh so that every student who passes out from this school has the confidence to sacrifice their lives for the country. In the end, he asked the students to remember that even the poorest have contributed to the facilities they are getting at this school, saying it is taxpayers’ money.
