On Wednesday, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced a groundbreaking initiative to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) courses in government schools throughout the state. This educational reform is set to impart AI training to 100,000 students and provide specialized training for 10,000 teachers.
Addressing a "Sikhiya Kranti" rally alongside AAP national convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Mann emphasized that Punjab, known historically for the Green Revolution and the White Revolution, is now embarking on an education revolution.
The state government's visionary plan aims to equip 100,000 students with AI skills. This initiative recognizes the importance of preparing the youth for the future job market, where AI-related skills are in high demand. In order to ensure the effective delivery of AI courses, 10,000 teachers will receive specialized training. This investment in teacher development is pivotal to enhancing the quality of education in government schools. Also, each school will have a designated "campus manager" to improve school management and administration.
The government is committing substantial resources to enhance school infrastructure, including constructing boundary walls in over 7,000 schools (Rs 358 crore), providing benches and furniture (Rs 25 crore), building washrooms (Rs 60 crore), and constructing 10,000 new classrooms (Rs 800 crore).
Punjab aims to become the first Indian state to offer WiFi connectivity in every school. Within six months, internet facilities will be extended to all schools, facilitating digital learning and access to educational resources.
Over the past 18 months, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab has generated more than 36,097 jobs for the youth across diverse departments, emphasizing merit-based appointments and transparency. To enhance teacher capabilities, the government is facilitating international and domestic professional training opportunities. This investment aligns to deliver high-quality education.
