The Central Board of Secondary Education will launch 'The Reading Mission'. The objective of the Mission is to advance reading literacy among the students. The reading literacy improvement is also in with the Nation Education Policy's objective.

The Director of CBSE Academics Joseph Emmanuel informed that CBSE has designed the programme to improve reading habits among the students.

The National Achievement Survey 2017 revealed that 1/3rd of the total school students cannot write and read properly. Reading is the core competency that leads to understanding, interpretation, analyzing, creativity, and evaluation, he added.

The objective of the campaign is to make every student proficient in reading with a minimum speed, added Emmanuel.

The Mission will be implemented across all schools in India. Pratham Books has also offered to use all their books free of cost to all the schools.

The Mission is targeting Class 01 to Class 07 students. For students of Class 01 and Class 02, 60 books are available, 61 books for Class 03 and Class 04, 66 books for Class 05 and Class 06, and 62 books for Class 07 and Class 08. Under the campaign, appropriate level books have also been prepared to promote age-appropriate reading skills.

The Reading Mission will also help in the capacity building of teachers.
