On Thursday, Union science and technology minister Jitendra Singh said that 37 CSIR Indian labs will be transformed into global centres of research and innovation in their respective areas of specialisation.
Jitendra Singh informed that the ministry is preparing a blueprint to determine the niche technology of each science laboratory, their funding and workforce requirements, and international cooperation and has also initiated a one-week, one-lab campaign.
Starting the campaign on Friday, Jitendra Singh stated that each of the 37 CSIR labs is dedicated to a diverse exclusive area of work, and the drive will deliver an opportunity for each of them to showcase the work being done so that others can take benefit of it, and stakeholders can learn about it. During the one-week campaign, each CSIR lab will conduct events, including industry and start-ups meetings, students’ and society connect, and a display of technologies.
The minister informed that in the last decade, CSIR promoted the nation with its biofuel-powered flight, Bharatiya Nirdeshak Dravya, asafoetida (Heeng) cultivation, homegrown development of dental implants, high-resolution aquifer mapping, development of CSIR- TechnoS Raman spectrometers, indigenously developed hydrogen fuel cell bus, road construction with steel slag, trainer aircraft HANSA-NG, and various other technologies developed at diverse laboratories.
N Kalaiselvi, CSIR director general, said the campaign is an out-of-box concept of Jitendra Singh only to reach out to the people in India and the globe about the victory stories of CSIR.
The campaign will also concentrate on academics and skill development, where interested students from varying disciplines get to know about the research activities and facilities of the CSIR laboratories and get a reference for future prospects. Another focus of the campaign is to support more start-ups and entrepreneurship along with the dissemination of science and technologies.
