In an exciting development, the Department of School Education and Literacy of the Education Ministry has introduced new guidelines that will revolutionize career counseling in cluster-level schools. Under these guidelines, career counseling will commence as early as Class 9, providing students with invaluable guidance for their future paths.

The scheme, an extension of the career guidance initiative, will deploy dedicated career counselors in secondary and higher secondary cluster schools. These counselors will engage with students once every 15 days, helping them navigate the choices ahead. This inclusive programme will encompass schools in 7,116 existing blocks across the country.

The Ministry's renowned education scheme, Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), will play a pivotal role in this initiative. It not only includes the provision of qualified counselors but also offers financial support of Rs 5 lakh annually. As part of the scheme, an Academic Resource Person (ARC) will be appointed to assess students' strengths, interests, and other variables, assisting them in selecting the most suitable career paths.

The Academic Resource Person for career counseling will utilize various assessments, including the TAMANNA tool developed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), to identify students' areas of interest and skill.

According to the guidelines, the ARC can organize career melas, forging partnerships with industries and employers to explore suitable placements for graduating students. Additionally, group-level counseling sessions will be organized for students in Classes 9 to 12.

The scheme emphasizes the integration of technology to enhance the efficacy of counseling. The guidelines recommend developing a website or app-based platform to facilitate real-time content management for students' career exploration. Through this platform, students can create profiles highlighting their career aspirations, including streams, higher education, and job preferences. They will have access to relevant job opportunities, the ability to apply for positions, and track their application outcomes.

The website or app will also provide crucial information on vocational education opportunities aligned with students' profiles. It will offer comprehensive details on colleges, including fees, ratings, courses, application processes, and scholarship information, among other valuable resources.

According to government data, this transformative scheme will benefit approximately 2.9 crore students across states and union territories, with an annual financial implication of Rs 211 crore.

In addition to student-centric provisions, the scheme also focuses on capacity building and training programs for career counselors, ensuring their continuous professional development to provide high-quality guidance.
