Major changes are coming to how students take exams in school. Instead of having one big exam at the end of the year, there will now be two exams in a year. This change aims to help students feel less stressed about their exams. The government's Education Ministry has decided to improve the way students learn.
In an announcement today, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan unveiled that the new curriculum framework, aligned with the contours of the National Education Policy 2020, stands poised for implementation. This forthcoming transition will culminate in the development of textbooks tailored for the academic year 2024, ushering in a transformative educational approach.
One important rule is that students will now have to learn two languages. The hallmark of this new pedagogical paradigm, as stipulated by the New Education Policy (NEP), is the mandate for students to engage with two languages, one of them being a language indigenous to India. This rule is not only to teach different languages but also to celebrate the different cultures of India. This rule will apply when students are in the 11th and 12th grades.
The new way of learning will focus on understanding and skills rather than just memorizing facts. Students will be asked more practical questions that show they understand the subjects.
Exams will happen twice a year now. Students will have two chances to do well in their exams. They can pick the subjects they are confident about and take the exam for those. And if they do better in the second exam, that score will be counted.
Another change is that students will have more choices in what they study. They won't be limited to just a few streams like Science, Arts, or Commerce. This way, students can explore different subjects and learn more about what interests them.
The new way of learning also wants to ensure students don't just read textbooks in class. Instead of just "covering" the books, teachers will focus on making sure students understand what they are learning. The government also wants to confirm that textbooks are not too expensive so that all students can have access to a good education.
