The Union Cabinet has renamed the Mid-Day Meal Scheme as PM POSHAN Scheme to cover the pre-primary and balvatikas students also. The Scheme covers the government and govt-aided schools. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the decision in the 'Cabinet Committee in Economic Affairs' meeting.



The Union Cabinet has approved the scheme to provide hot cooked meal to elementary class students govt and govt-aided schools across the nation from 2021-22 to 2025-26. The Scheme is centre sponsored and cover all school children From Class 01 to Class 08.



Unde the Scheme, the govt has also added several features such as 'Tithi Bhojan' scheme which will allow people from different communities to provide special food to schools on festivals and occasions, using 'school nutrition garden's harvest to cook mid-day meals, organizing cooking competitions to promote innovative menus and ethnic cuisine, and involvement of Women Self Help Groups and FPO (Farmers Producer Organizations) to implement the scheme.



The new scheme will cover 11.80 crore children studying across 11.20 lakh schools.



The Govt has also made social audit of the scheme mandatory in all districts and will also provide special nutrition items in required areas.
