The Indira Gandhi National Open University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship to link vocational education and training with higher education.

The objective of the agreement is to create a channel for work opportunities for the youth of the country and also to strengthen the framework of vocational and technical training.

The recipients of the programme include trainees who are attached to the National Skill Training Institutes, Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendras, Industrial Training Institutes, and Jan Shikshan Sansthanas.

Around 32 NSTIs, 500 PMKKs, 300 JSS, and 3000 ITIs will be amalgamated with the varsity as registration, examination, and work centres, according to an official statement.

A project steering committee will monitor and review the progress of the programme. This committee will comprise representatives from both – the skill ministry and the varsity.

Both the parties have signed the memorandum for a period of 10 years which is subject to renewal on mutual agreement.
