Karnataka's State Education Policy (SEP) commission is embarking on a transformative mission to revamp the state's education system, addressing both short-term and long-term challenges. Under the leadership of Sukhdev Thorat, former UGC Chairman and the current SEP Chairman, the commission is committed to adopting a comprehensive and forward-thinking approach.

The commission's formation was initiated by a government order on October 11, resulting in a 15-member committee responsible for drafting the state's education policy. This committee includes retired ICS officers, professors, and writers. The primary objective is to conduct a thorough assessment of the current status of schools and higher education institutions in Karnataka, with a comprehensive report expected by February 28, 2024.

To ensure a comprehensive approach, the commission has established nine working groups, each dedicated to specific aspects of education. These groups will tackle issues related to quality, accessibility, financing, governance, student enrollment, professional education, online and distance education, and the role of value education in the curriculum. The commission aims to gather input from a wide range of stakeholders, including former vice-chancellors, education experts, retired professors, civil society groups, and student forums.

Sukhdev Thorat has emphasized that the SEP will be firmly rooted in facts, avoiding presumptions, and drawing inspiration from the reports of the Radhakrishnan Commission and Kothari Commission. The commission is open to requesting an extension if needed, and the implementation of the SEP will be determined by the government. This significant step aligns with a proposal made in August, underscoring the government's commitment to develop an SEP for the upcoming academic year.
