Pakistan’s Punjab government has launched its first transgender public school in the provincial capital to empower more trans persons in society.
Earlier, Pakistan’s Punjab government had set up three transgender schools in DG Khan, Multan, and Bahawalpur to educate and teach new skills to trans persons.
These institutions offer free education from primary to higher secondary classes while imparting skill training such as stitching, cooking, and beauty make-up.
The Lahore school, which opened on Wednesday, will work in two shifts, where the first half will impart mainstream education while the second half will concentrate on teaching technical skills.
The Punjab School Education Department said that Lahore’s school for transgender would work in two shifts. In the first, the students will be provided with education, while in the second shift, they will obtain training in technical skills. The government will deliver free books, school bags, uniforms, and pick-and-drop service.
So far, 36 transgender students have been registered in the school.
The statement further added that the teachers at the school also belong to the transgender community, while two advisers have been employed to help the community understand their difficulties.
Punjab has around 64.4% of the country’s transgender population, with 6,709 individuals registered in the category.
However, Lahore and its bordering areas alone have a population of 30,000 transgender persons.
Access to education is the fundamental right of every Pakistani, but transgender individuals face bias in the country, and the plurality of them toil to find employment.
The country’s upper house- Senate, unanimously consented to a bill in 2018 for the protection of the rights of the transgender community, empowering them to specify their own gender identity.
