Madras University is planning to offer 01 free seat to Transgender candidates in each affiliated college. Under this initiative, the college will offer free seat for Undergraduate programme.



The University, with this decision, aims at promoting the education among Transgender community.



The decision will be implemented from the 2022-23 academic year.



The Vice-Chancellor of the University S. Gowri informed that the university is thinking about getting the synidacte's approval for this proposal during its next meeting.



During the academic session 2021-22, the University offered a supernumerary seat to transgenders for PG programme in college but it remained empty as no one joined.



The UoM is already offering 02 free seats to poor students beloging to socially and economically backward community in its each affiliated colleges. In the 2021-22 academic session, the University enrolled 340 students beloging to poor economic backgrounds from 131 families.



The transgender activist Kalki Subramaniam said, "I have always been a votary for higher education to transgender people and the Madras University has taken a step in the right direction".
