Parliamentary Panel Suggests Education Ministry Initiate scholarships to help underprivileged students, covering all e-learning costs
The committee's report, presented in the Rajya Sabha, outlined their recommendation: "The committee recommends that the department should look into a proposal to start the PM e-Vidya Scholarship Scheme for e-learning or SWAYAMPRABHA Courses for underprivileged and students belonging to rural backgrounds. The scholarship scheme must cover all expenses related to e-learning."

A suggestion has been put forth by a parliamentary panel recommending the Ministry of Education consider the introduction of the PM e-Vidya scholarship scheme. This initiative aims to offer help to underprivileged and rural students in their pursuit of digital learning. The proposed scholarship program is envisioned to encompass all expenses related to e-learning, facilitating a more inclusive educational environment.



Supported by Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Thakur, the standing committee on education, women, children, youth, and sports has extended their suggestion even further. They propose the expansion of educational content dissemination by broadcasting the existing 22 Direct-to-Home (DTH) channels on prominent video streaming and social media platforms. This strategy is intended to enhance the accessibility of educational content and cater to a broader audience.



Outlined in their report presented to the Rajya Sabha, the committee's recommendation is explicit: "The department is urged to explore the possibility of initiating the PM e-Vidya Scholarship Scheme for e-learning or SWAYAMPRABHA Courses targeting disadvantaged students and those hailing from rural backgrounds. This scholarship scheme should comprehensively cover the financial aspects associated with e-learning."



In addition, the panel has endorsed the idea of extending the reach of educational content from the 22 DTH channels to well-known digital platforms. The committee has advised the concerned department to closely monitor and evaluate the advancement of digital education and e-learning platforms, particularly in remote and rural areas. They emphasize the importance of consistent updates from the department regarding the accessibility and impact of these platforms.



The PM eVIDYA initiative, which was launched in May 2020 as part of the "Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan," seeks to unify various endeavors related to digital, online, and on-air education. This initiative leverages technology to ensure diverse modes of accessing education, aiming to bridge learning gaps.



Notably, the committee had previously recommended identifying remote regions lacking digital connectivity and introducing contemporary e-learning platforms. This approach aims to equip students with skills that align with industry demands, ultimately enhancing their employability prospects.



In response, the Ministry of Education has highlighted that the existing PM e-Vidya initiative already encompasses 22 DTH educational channels. The ministry emphasizes the effectiveness of broadcasting educational content via DTH channels, which particularly benefits areas with limited internet connectivity.



In overview, the committee underscores the significance of offering financial assistance through the PM e-Vidya scholarship scheme for e-learning. Additionally, they propose an evaluation of the accessibility of digital education and e-learning platforms in remote and rural areas. The committee emphasizes the importance of continuous communication with the committee to share insights on their findings.
