The NAMO Medical Education and Research Institute, the only medical college in the Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, has become a beacon of hope and a symbol of the region's growth aspirations, with tribals constituting roughly 40% of the population. The institute began operations in a leased building and is now ready to relocate to its own campus, which spans 35 acres in Silvassa. On April 17, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate the facility. In 2019, he laid the groundwork. The infrastructure cost Rs 203 crore and includes cutting-edge amenities such as a multi-story library, an academic block with four lecture halls and an auditorium, a clubhouse, and residential units.
- The number has gradually increased to 177, with 27 seats reserved for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The college currently has 682 students enrolled. "Our goal is to increase the number of seats to 200," Goyal explained.
- Third-year student Mitesh Jha considers himself fortunate, unlike previous generations of meritorious students who had to compete for a limited number of medical seats from the Union Territory in order to pursue their dream of becoming doctors.
Jha is looking forward to meeting the Prime Minister during his visit to inaugurate the new campus. "I am very excited to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi," Jha added. Mehak Bhasara, a first-year tribal student, summed up the change in the area. She is from Randha village in the Silvassa district. "No one in my family, or even in my entire village, could become a doctor." "It's my fortune that a medical college has opened in Dadra and Nagar Haveli," she said, adding that she plans to serve the people of the area after she graduates. Students from low-income families can also pursue their medical dreams thanks to this medical college.
The Shri Vinoba Bhave Civil Hospital, located four kilometers from the medical college, serves the entire population of the Union Territory as well as adjoining villages in Gujarat and Maharashtra, as well as other states. It began as a 60-bed facility with the bare necessities in 1952 and was later expanded to 316 beds. It currently has 650 beds and is being expanded to 1,270 beds. Aside from the NAMO Medical Education and Research Institute, Modi will also lay the groundwork for the proposed Ayurvedic Hospital and Wellness Centre, which will be built on 40 acres of land near Madhuban Dam in a tranquil area surrounded by lush greenery. It is estimated to cost Rs 70.
