Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister of Railways, announced the setting up of Gatishakti University for engineering, technicality, and finance education of highways, metros, ports, and railways to handle the complex system of the transport sector.

Yesterday, the Lok Sabha passed the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2022, which aspires to designate the Gati Shakti Vishwavidaylaya as a Central University, modifying the form of the National Rail and Transportation University, which is an institution in Vadodara. The (Amendment) Bill also aims to boost the scope of the deemed university from exceeding the railways to shield the entire transport sector to support ambitious growth and modernization in the field as notified in the Union Budget this year.

While addressing the Parliament, the minister stated that the transport sector is complex, especially railways and metros. He added that they need technical education in order to handle such a complex system. So they put forth the idea of Gatishakti University for engineering, technicality, and finance education of highways, metros, ports, and railways.

According to the statement by Vaishnaw, the university will focus on five areas- Skill development, Technology development, Transport-based courses, Transport economics, and Applied research. Also, in 2018, Modi Government commenced the Railway University in Vadodara. The university provided two programs, a Bachelor of Business in Transport Management and a Bachelor of Science in Transport Technology.

Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, commented that the Gatishakti project is to unify diverse departments to create a new infrastructure where various transport sector elements- road, waterways, railways, aviation, and port along with information and technology will coordinate with each other on a single platform of Gati Shakti Mission. He added the proposal global standard institute aimed at producing job creators, not job seekers.
