A Zilla Parishad primary school teacher from Solapur’s Paritewadi village, Ranjitsinh Disale, won the Global Teacher Prize 2020 along with the prize money of $1 million. The quality that sets him apart from the other winners is that he shared the prize money equally with the nine other teachers who made it to the top 10.

Ranjitsinh said that one of his students in the Zilla Parishad primary school always says- ‘God gives us to share with others, and this belief has stuck with me for years. So the thought of sharing the prize money was encouraged by my student. And today, he feels content as the decision resulted in excellent outcomes.

He shared that he believes teachers can bring real change, and he wants each one to get an equal chance to do so. Today, the prize money he won is being used to construct digital classrooms in Nigeria, libraries in Vietnam, two scholarship schemes for 20 eligible students in USA and Italy, and a project in order to promote education for specially-abled students in Brazil.

Disale’s purpose with the remaining reward money was to undertake an initiative to ensure that each year at least 5,000 students from the war-afflicted countries of the world are recruited into a Peace Army. The prize money will aid by reaching out to the maximum number of schools and students.

Disale commented that each year, governments spend billions of dollars to strengthen their army throughout the globe. I believe that if they expend even half of that amount on educating the children, the world will be a better place with no sign of warfares. He also launched an initiative- ‘Let’s Cross the Borders’ in 2017. A part of this initiative is to build a peaceful army of students in war-hit countries.

Let’s Cross the Borders is a Skype-based collaborative project connecting students from nations in conflict. The six-week programme interests 150 schools & 5,000 students. It matches ‘peace buddies’ across countries, addresses problems of conflict, attempts to discover ways to settle problems and tries to draw up plans of action for the future. The project is currently working among students from six countries – India and Pakistan, the US, South Korea, Palestine, and Israel.

Ranjitsinh Disale informed that after winning the global teacher prize, many teachers around the world approached him to grow this initiative and welcome more schools and countries. He added that they are working on a global curriculum and will be boosted to cover many other countries shortly. Disale shared that the enhancement of the education system in rural and urban areas depends upon the participation of teachers.

Disale suggested that teachers should think of out-of-the-box strategies to keep their students curious about their studies, and getting synced with technology is a primary tool for that. The day all teachers stop bothering about their income from the work they do and are concerned about the developments of their teaching, the evolution of countries will grow tenfold. In the end, he said that students come to schools to learn, and it is our responsibility as teachers to educate them right.

Disale is presently in the USA to observe a Fullbright scholarship. He wishes to return to India in the coming years and contribute his time to the execution of the National Education Policy 2020.
