Tamil Nadu CM Launched 'MaNaM' Initiative To Provide Psychological Help to Medical College Students
Health Minister Ma Subramanian said the MaNaM aims at preventing suicides and suicidal preferences among the students and also to tackle their mental health problems in all the 36 government medical colleges across Tamil Nadu.

On Thursday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin introduced (MaNaM)- the Mananala Nallaatharavu Mandram, an initiative by the State government for the mental health of medical college students through psychological support.



Also, he initiated 75 upgraded ambulances of the GVK EMRI 108 ambulance service, prepared with modern life-saving equipment, at an assessed cost of Rs 22.84 crores. He also inaugurated an intermediate care centre for prisoners at the (IMH) Institute of Mental Health.



The centre, with 14 rooms, was established for Rs 2.36 crore. The Half Way Home, already operating at the IMH to give shelter to the patients who recovered but were not accepted by their families was upgraded.



Health Minister Ma Subramanian said the MaNaM aims at preventing suicides and suicidal preferences among the students and also to tackle their mental health problems in all the 36 government medical colleges across Tamil Nadu.



Under this programme, peer consultants would identify students with mental distress and deliver them psychological support. Subramanian said a team that comprises a professor and ten students would be established in each college for the objective.



"Initially, MaNaM will be executed in all the medical colleges and slowly expanded to the arts and science institutes," Subramanian added. MaNaM-the Mananala Nallaatharavu Mandram helpline number is 14416. Efforts to boost the IMH to a premier Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences were on. The Chief Minister revealed a three-dimensional idea for the proposed new building.
